Hao Xue

Hi! I am an Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), based in the Urban Governance and Design (UGOD) Thrust of the Society Hub, with a joint appointment in the AI Thrust of the Information Hub. I am also an Affiliated Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and a co-founder of Data Cruiser, a Sydney-based spin-out built on our research.

Before joining HKUST(GZ) in February 2026, I was a Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), Australia, and before that a Research Fellow at UNSW Sydney and RMIT University. I am an Associate Investigator of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) and co-lead its GenAISim signature project.

My research sits at the intersection of AI and ubiquitous, urban systems: spatiotemporal data representation and reasoning, foundation models for multimodal and dynamic environments, large language models for time series and sensor data, and open-world learning and reasoning. Applications include transportation and human mobility, energy and buildings, public health, and wearable and IoT sensing.

I obtained my PhD in Computer Science from The University of Western Australia in 2020. Before that, I obtained my bachelor's and master's degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2014 and 2016.
